City of St. Petersburg, FL to Honor Marty Lyons

Marty Lyons, a 1975 graduate of St. Petersburg Catholic High School, will be honored by the city of St. Petersburg, Florida. An assembly will be held from 2:00-3:00 p.m. on Monday, March 27 at the St. John Bosco Center for the Arts at St. Petersburg Catholic High School. By proclamation of the city of St. Petersburg, March 27, 2006 will be known as "Marty Lyons Day." Friends and family will be in attendance at the ceremony.

Mr. Lyons was an All-American football player at the University of Alabama and a member of the feared New York Jets "Sack Exchange." He is also the founder of The Marty Lyons Foundation. The Foundation has granted over 3000 wishes to children suffering from life-threatening or terminal illnesses since it was incorporated in 1982. Lyons was named the National Football League Man of the Year in 1984 for this work with his foundation. Additionally, the New York Jets Outstanding Community Service Award has been renamed the Marty Lyons Award. Marty remains active in the Foundation and through Marty’s message of courage and the joy of wishes granted, The Foundation helps lift children’s spirits and lets the magic of hope lead their thoughts and dreams for the future. In conjunction with the St. Petersburg ceremony, Marty will be making two media appearances. He will be on television as a guest on the Toyota Sports Connection on March 26 at 11:00 p.m. (Bay News 9--St. Petersburg). He will also appear on the radio as a guest on the Gus Lloyd Morning Show on March 27 at 8:15 a.m. (Spirit FM Radio--90.5 Tampa). At the St. Petersburg Catholic ceremony, Marty will speak to the students about his St. Pete Catholic experience and about how the students can make a difference in society.
