Chiefs likely to be without Holmes on Sunday

Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Kansas City Chiefs running back Priest Holmes was downgraded to doubtful with a concussion and is in jeopardy of missing Sunday's game versus the Oakland Raiders.

Holmes, who sat out the team's practice for the second straight day, had been in California seeing a neurological specialist about the hit he took that caused him to leave last Sunday's game versus San Diego.

He was injured in the third quarter of Kansas City's 28-20 defeat after receiving a hard hit from Chargers' rookie Shawne Merriman. He finished with just 38 yards on 14 attempts.
Head coach Dick Vermeil did not seem optimistic about Holmes' availability for Sunday.
"It's doubtful," Vermeil said during Friday's press conference.

Holmes leads the Chiefs with 451 rushing yards and six touchdowns on the ground. He has also caught 21 passes for 197 yards and an additional score.

Larry Johnson, who has been splitting time with Holmes for much of the season, will get the bulk of the carries if the Pro Bowl back is unable to go.

In other team news, left tackle Willie Roaf was downgraded to questionable after aggravating a hamstring injury, as is cornerback Patrick Surtain, who has a knee injury. Both players did not practice on Friday.

Roaf, though, was also involved in a car accident earlier in the day.

"Willie Roaf was in an auto accident this morning," Vermeil said. "Not injured. The car was injured and has been put on IR for the year - the car that is. He's home. He's fine. He's been checked out by the doctor. It shook him up. I don't know (if he will play) yet. It has nothing to do with the auto accident. It has everything to do with the hamstring."

Quarterback Trent Green is also listed as questionable after returning from funeral services for his father, but he expects to play.

"I think it's important to play," said Green. "Number one, I think that's what my dad would want me to do. Just like last week, he would have wanted me to play. I think it would be good for my family to try to get back some normalcy and, hopefully, provide a little bit of an escape while the game's going on - give them something else to think about. And, I don't want to let all the guys down that are in the locker room -- all the coaches and the team in general. I feel like I'll be ready to play."

Three days after his father's death, Green threw for 247 yards and two touchdowns against San Diego last Sunday.

Green has made a team-record 71 consecutive starts.
