Cavan open account

Cavan produced a disjointed display but still managed to claim their first NFL Division 2B points of the season at the expense of pointless (1-13 to 1-12) Wicklow after a cracking clash at atmospheric Aughrim.

The Ulstermen were a class apart for most of the first half with a brillant brace of points from 2005 minor star Ronan Flanagan helping to propel them to a none-too flattering 0-6 to 0-1 lead after 24 minutes.

Things continued to look rosy for the blues as seasoned campaigner Larry Reilly stretched Cavan’s lead to six points just three minutes later.

The homesters’ forwards profited greatly from running directly at the backpeddling Cavan defence and the points flowed accordingly.

Good scores from Gareth Doyle, O’Gorman and Tommy Gill for Wicklow went unanswered as Wicklow gained parity at 1-4 to 0-7 with 33 minutes on the clock.
The much improved Wicklow men continued to remain on the forefoot as they sought to consolidate their 1-6 to 0-8 interval advantage.

Dual star Leightin Glynn - relocated from centre-back to the half forward line with great effect - pointed to leave once cocky Cavan continuing to struggle to recover their first half lustre.
With 11 minutes played in the second half Wicklow looked well poised to nab their first brace of NFL points as a brace of points from goalscorer O’Gorman served to hand Kenny’s charges a 1-9 to 0-8 cushioned lead.

Wicklow tried desperately thereafter to pull the fat from the fire and while Tommy Gill nabbed two quick points, it was all to no avail as for the second weekend in succession they fell short of the mark against northern opposition.
